Harry Thompson: A Biography Of Peter Cook
"...Wonderful book, always gripping. I have read many biogs of TV Comics/Film Stars etc and my interest has waned with irrelevant, wandering facts but not with this book! Compelling reading, could not put it down. Always thought of Peter Cook as satirical, wordy, clever genius and this book balances this part of him with the sad, dark side as well. One of the best, if not the best, biographies I have ever read. A must have. Amazon UK reviewer Alexandra Ellis
"...even though he was a man who had many faults - and these are largely discussed in the book - the way Thompson writes about him, he comes across as a man who also had numerous qualities and gifts, not least that of a comedy genius and pioneer..." Amazon UK reviewer A. Customer
A must for anyone who has an ounce of interest in British comedy, or for that matter, impeccably constructed biographies. Amazon UK reviewer A. B. Pearl
In 2004, Not Only But Always, a Peter Cook and Dudley Moore bio-pic, written and directed by Terry Johnson, was released to mostly enthusiastic reviews.
It starred Rhys Ifans (who won a BAFTA Best Actor award for his performance) as Peter Cook and Aidan McArdle as Dudley Moore.
The script was greatly influenced by Harry Thompson's powerful biography of Cook and our hero is not so much a hero as a sad, self-loathing genius. Moore, on the other hand, is seen as someone who sees Cook frequently as a tormentor but acknowledges that it is only with his long-standing partner that he does his best work. As you might imagine, theirs was a marriage from Hell.
