Y'know, I'd heard from an awful lot of women that they thought Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe was a great movie...but there's no way you could call it an ordinary chick-flick.
Fried Green Tomatoes is a story about two friendships:
Ruth Jamison (Mary-Louise Parker) & Igie Threadgoode (Mary Louise Masterson), two childhood friends, who eventually become the owners of The Whistle Stop Cafe. There's certainly an erotic tension between the two but in the 1930's they both interpret it as only "friendship" and certainly as love, until their respective deaths
the relationship between our narrator, Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy) & Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) a casual visitor to Mary's retirement home.
The two strike up an unlikely friendship and Mary ends up telling Evelyn all about the comings and goings at The Whistle Stop Cafe, a process which eventually enable Evelyn to change her life, very much for the better.

I'm not going to reveal much of the plot, simply because:
Female Empowerment
subtle wisdom from another era
the Klu Klux Klan

the imaginative disposal of a corpse
...is a fairly interesting mix that shouldn't be lessened by being a spoiler but I will say that the script writers, Fannie Flagg (adapting her original novel)...

"...Read the book, it's better than the movie and you will be glad you did..."Amazon reviewer Cat Reuss
"...While describing a friendship between two women some 60 years before and a present day relationship between a nursing home resident and her loyal visitor, the reader is set off on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Dealing with subects as far reaching as women's liberation, homosexual relationships, rights of minority groups, integration and growing old, Fannie Flagg never fails to entice her readers and allow them to view a slice of American life now sadly gone..."Amazon reviewer Nancy R. ...and Carol Sobieski, are cavalier with their manipulations, which may or may not sit well with you. In particular, white men of any era don't really come out particularly well, so if you're male, middle-aged and married, I'd advise discouraging your wife from seeing it!
Fried Green Tomatoes DVD
"...One of my all time favorite movies. Even though there are parts of it that are sad, there are many uplifting moments. I'm from Alabama and I think they did a pretty good job overall of giving a glimpse into life in the Depression era South. If you don't understand the meaning of loyalty, then you need to watch this movie. There's something for everyone here! Oh yeah, the book is great too, although a little short. It even includes some recipes for those famous fried green tomatoes! YUM!!..." Amazon reviewer Bulldogger "foreignfilmlover"
"...One of the best classics ever from the '90s. Emotional, heart breaking, encouraging and amazingly funny. It can touch your heart so deep and you go from an emotion to another over and over. When you have a teardpop on your cheek, you can find yourself laughing. It is also a great pleasue to watch all of the 4 leading ladies. They are unbelievable! Especially Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy..."Amazon reviewer Duyqu

I really enjoyed Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe, a a low-budget quality experience. If you're after a movie with four well-written female roles, acted beautifully, then it's is a must-see.

Fried Green Tomatoes score
"...In my opinion, the score to this film is superior to the film itself. It's the only motion picture score that truly captures the sweet melancholy of the Fall...
...Just close your eyes and you'll feel the brisk autumn wind against your face, you'll see orange and brown leaves falling from the trees, and you'll hear the sounds of children carving jack o'lanterns. It's a short score, but truly excellent..."Amazon reviewer12stone10
Fried Green Tomatoes: Fannie Flagg's cookbook
"...I read Ms. Flagg's cookbook with delight, anticipation, more than a few hunger pangs, and a profound sense of relief that somebody, somewhere had the good sense to preserve these fine old dishes of the deep South and pass them on.
Her recipe for Chicken'n'Dumplings matches the faded 3x5 card version I inherited from my mother almost to a tee. Her Fried Chicken is enough to send the health-conscious into a coma! Well, y'all. Welcome south. We fry things down here, but at least the food has some flavor and texture.
Take Fried Green Tomatoes as one example. You can't "boil" green tomatoes; nor can they be broiled, roasted, or baked. Honey, they gots to be FRIED but one bite, and your taste buds done boarded the glory train to Paradise..."Amazon reviewerJames G. Lipscomb
In Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe, Evelyn's starts selling Mary Kay cosmetics and builds a thriving business. That success-story within the movie led to a fascinating cross promotion of the film via network marketing when it was eventually released as you'll see in the Mary Kay featurette
