Evil Dead 2

Evil Dead 2
I remember being recommended to see Evil Dead 2 back in the late 1980s by a film-buff friend of mine, Richard Kuipers, now one of Australia's few decent movie critics, which I think he referred to as a "schlock-horror Z-grade low-budget movie".
Apparently it's just a bigger-budget remake of Evil Dead, which must have been made on virtually nothing, because Evil Dead 2 is cheap, cheap, cheap, looking more like a Third World movie with lots of dubbed dialogue (recording sound virtually doubles your basic costs on location) and inspirational use of make-up and fake blood.
I'm not going to even bother mentioning the plot as it's really only a vehicle for cartoon gore against crazed zombies but I can strongly recommend Evil Dead 2 for two distinct audiences:
-
the college crowd, who might want a boo-hiss movie for a booze-fuelled party
-
anybody interested in making movies. Director Sam Raimi carved a serious career path for himself with this mini-classic and went on to direct Spiderman 1 & 2

"...No horror collection is complete without Sam Raimi's Evil Dead II, honestly...(it) remains almost timeless with its over-the-top gore and sadistically savage humor..." Amazon reviewer Kevin Apocalypse
"...Holy cow, this movie was crazy hilarious!...There are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments that will have you shaking your head in amusement...my favorite parts of the movie is when Ash's hand gets possessed and it starts attacking him....The other was right after Ash fit a chainsaw to where his hand used to be (he had to cut it off - ED.) and takes a cut-off shotgun in the other and says, "Groovy...Let's go kill me some evil!!!"Amazon reviewer L "runner2000"

Evil Dead 2 isn't Art, it's not even scarey...but it's heaps of fun in a disturbing, psychotic way. Oh, and apparently the sound has been remixed using state-or-the-art THX, so Evil Dead 2 is probably even funnier now. Enjoy.
