The 40 Year Old Virgin
If you're offended by graphic, colorful language and objectivisation of females and their er...form, then The 40 Year Old Virgin is definitely not for you! It's relentlessly puerile, frequently crass and er...climaxes with a bizarre, surreal ending with music (The Age Of Aquarius from the 1967 musical Hair) that has absolutely no relevance to the plot whatsoever! However, I like The 40 Year Old Virgin. Quite a bit, actually!

The 40 Year Old Virgin
The basic premise is strong. 40 year old super-nerd Andy Stizer (Steve Carrell) is discovered to be a virgin by his workmates:
-
heart-broken David, (Paul Rudd)
-
black stud homie-talkin' Jay, (Romany Malco) &
-
would-be jewish novelist Cal, (Seth Rogen)
...and they take it upon themselves to educate him and quickly end his drought. Unlike, e.g. the American Pie movies, though, Andy is far from enthusiastic about the whole process and his pathetic ineptitude creates some genuinely funny moments.
The speed-dating sequence, is in particular er...educational and the extended version in the special features is even better. Wow, it's a jungle out there! Incidentally, women of dating age could do no better than to see The 40 Year Old Virgin to find out how a significant proprtion of American males think.

Despite the boys' best efforts to interest Andy in the abounding good looking young local fillies, he finds himself drawn to Trish (Christine Keeler) a 40 year-old homely divorcee grandmother(!), who runs her own we-sell-your-stuff-on-eBay business and they tentatively start to date.

"...I hope you have a big trunk because I'm gonna put my bike in it..."
Wishing to "take things slowly", Trish suggests a 20-date sex-free introductory period, much to Andy's relief, because he's terrified of breaking his drought. Unfortunately, problems arise when that time is up and Trish wants some lovin'.

Co-writer Steve Carrell is pretty believable as Andy (the hair waxing scene is hilarious, even funnier with the Audio commentary track) but it's the supporting cast of his three friends and
...who really make The 40 Year Old Virgin memorable. They've got some geninely funny ensemble pieces, with my favorite being David & Cal's "Do you know how I know you're gay?" sequence.

The biggest downside for me is that, unfortunately, I think that female lead Keeler seems horribly miscast and, frankly, her character, far from being a great catch, is, at times, foul-mouthed, pushy and bullying. Personally, I'd find that a real turn-off! Other than that, though, The 40 Year Old Virgin is a wonderful naughty night's entertainment. Be prepared to be offended...and you may well have a great time, I did!
The 40 Year Old Virgin DVD
"...Surprise, it's a morality tale disguised as a sex comedy...it is...the smartest dumb movie I've seen in a very long time. Among its many surprises is you have a peer group of men who actually look out for each other...(it's)...anything but the one-note comedy that the commercials make it seem like..." Amazon reviewer Robert Barnwell
"... A rare gross-out movie that has a good story and has good acting. I really enjoyed this film from start to finish..." Amazon reviewer Jake
"...Such a cute movie & very funny...Beware for children that there is nudity, lots of 'dirty words' and adult situations. But it's all there to build the plot and characters. I love this movie and it's happy ending!.." Amazon reviewer Luv my dogs!
The 40 Year Old Virgin soundtrack
"...Soundtracks are all about setting a mood, so right away you know what to expect from one called The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Sure, it could try to portray the psychological complexity of the situation (though that would be a little creepy), but silly is definitely the safest and most-expected course. And "silly," "safe," and "expected" are the three words that best describe the The 40-Year-Old Virgin CD.
You don't need to see the movie to imagine what kind of scene might accompany:
-
Michael McDonald's Ain't No Mountain High Enough
-
Lionel Richie's Hello and
-
Never Surrender by Corey Hart..." Amazon blurb
